Ritalin Vs. Chiropractic

Author: Dr. Barton

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a relatively common condition that tends to emerge in children during their early school years. The most common signs of ADHD are:

  • Inattention
  •
  • Hyperactivity
  •
  • Impulsive Behavior
  •
  • Difficulty Concentrating

It is estimated that between 3 and 5 percent of children have ADHD - approximately 2 million children in the United States - and is much more common in boys than girls. This means that in a classroom of 25 to 30 children, it is likely that at least one will have ADHD.

According to figures released by the National Association of Teachers, over 35% of all school aged children have been diagnosed and labeled disabled (including physical, mental and emotional disorders and learning disabilities.)  The fastest growing population in the United States is now children with disabilities.  Millions of children are being drugged every day before going to school. These children need an opportunity to be treated naturally before resorting to chemical treatment with proven deleterious side-effects

It is not entirely certain what causes ADHD, but the current thought is that it is a combination of an overactive nervous system, coupled with a decrease in the brain's ability to filter out extraneous sights, sounds, thoughts and emotions. Although chiropractors don't directly treat ADHD, there are a number of things that your chiropractor can do to help eliminate things that stress a child's nervous system, such as:

  • Remove spinal subluxations that irritate the nervous system
  • Suggest dietary changes to avoid common problem foods
  • Test for allergies that may be stressing the nervous system
  • Suggest changes to the home to help reduce exposure to toxic chemicals

The most common medical treatment is the use of the drug methylphenidate, also known as Ritalin. Ritalin is actually a stimulant drug that normally speeds up the activity of the nervous system. But for reasons that are not entirely clear, it tends to have a calming effect on those who suffer from ADHD; possibly by increasing the activity in the area of the brain responsible for filtering out extraneous sensation. The problem with taking Ritalin is that is does not do anything to resolve the cause of the ADHD, it only masks the symptoms. Continued use of Ritalin over long periods of time has also been shown to have detrimental effects on the brain itself.

At Barton Chiropractic in Concord we believe that it is important as a parent to look at all treatment options before placing your child on Ritalin or any drug for that matter. Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Are chiropractic schools in place of a four year school right after high school or is it after college?

    • ANSWER:
Typically, you must have a bachelor's degree first. But I know that I've also seen people go to chiro school after only a year or two into their bachelor's degree. Then they take any remaining prerequisite classes at the chiro school and get a bachelor's of chiropractic science, before beginning their 3.5 years of chiro school. I think it may be possible to go directly to chiropractic school from high school, but they'll just make you take 2 years of prerequisite science classes first anyway. I would avoid doing this because a bachelor's of chiropractic science is utterly useless. At least if you decide to to quit chiropractic after a year or two of school, or even after you've been a chiropractor for 10 years (yes, I've seen it happen) you'll be able to fall back on your bachelor's degree if it was at a regular college or university.

  2. QUESTION:
    Chiropractor + Chiropractic school questions?
I have a few question concerning chiropractors and chiropractic schools. First of all, what is a good major to take when planning to go to chiropractor school? Biology, Chemistry, Biochemisty? Do you have to get a Bachelor's degree in order to be admitted in to chiropractor school? If not, does it help when applying? I thought it went like this: 3-4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of chiropractic school and one year of internship. Is that correct? If you are a chiropractor, could you say what you love and dislike about the job and the kind of person you should be if you want to become a chiropractor? Also, are chiropractors considered as physicians? thanks!

P.S. - Do you have to take math classes while an undergrad and in chiropractic school?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, you need a "pre-med" type degree. You should take Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, at least one Chemistry but since you don't do medicine a lot of biochem isn't necessary. Also take kinesiology and related classes if you have them. Enough math to do the physics (that class as well).

Chiropractors usually do most of their clinical work in the four years, but some do an intern year to learn advanced techniques.

Chiros are considered primary physicians by workers' comp and no-fault insurance in most states. In New York and some other states, they are covered by regular insurance--although many states and unions have riders for chiro care.

Chiros are considered inferior by medical doctors, but there is definitely a place for them and new research shows they can help people a lot.

  3. QUESTION:
My husband has decided to go to Chiropractic school which will take about 4 years. ?
I am a stay at home mom and we'd like it to stay that way because of the young ages of our children. Does anyone have a legitimate way to make some money from home? I already sell on Ebay some.

    • ANSWER:
First thing you want to do is lower your overhead which will be rent and utilities. Look at HUD Georgia website, there are assistance programs out there that offer significant discount for rent or sometimes free rent with subsidized utilities as well.

      http://www.hud.gov/local/index.cfm?state=ga&topic=renting

In terms of making money, there are numerous ways to make money from home. As you allude to, eBay is one option. Look through craigslist.org for the Atlanta area, pick up items for free or very cheap price, and resell them on eBay.

You can blog and earn money that way.

      http://www.ehow.com/how_2050755_make-money-from-blog.html?ref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art

Or become an online expert and get paid for answering questions. There are numerous websites, here are some.

      http://www.duno.com/
      http://www.expertbee.com/

  4. QUESTION:
    chiropractic pay?
Well I'm just wondering if a chiropractic's pay is good compared to the amount of years they spend in college (Considering they go for a Bachelor's Degree and 4 years in chiropractic school).

So is their pay any good compared to the time they spend in school? (In the US)

    • ANSWER:
The pay is really good for an established practice. Plus the malpractice risks and liabilities are less than a medical doctor.

  5. QUESTION:
What does the future of the chiropractic profession look like?
It seems to me that insurance companies have been cutting out more and more chiropractic services over the years. Chiropractic college tuition these days is right up there (almost) with medical school tuition, but on average DCs do not earn nearly as much as MDs. Will it be possible for DCs to make a decent living in the next 10-20 years? Are there any recent grads (within the last 5 years) that have been doing well financially?

    • ANSWER:
I love that answer by the student~ can't wait till she gets out of school~the fact of the matter is that chiropractors don't make money like they did 20 years ago~ And i don't care if you know someone who is doing great i will show you thousands that are not. My class of 60 less than 10 are still practicing i just graduated in 2003. Worst mistake of my life. If i didn't have the student loans it wouldn't be so bad. Do not get into this field!!!!!!!!!!
